Detailed Summary

Course Name

DC26T43E Video Game Design with Unreal Improvers

Who is this course for?

This course is tailored for individuals who already understand the basics of the Unreal Engine interface and wish to deepen their technical and design execution. It is suitable for: Graduates of the Beginners Course: Students looking for the direct next step in their learning pathway. Modders & Hobbyists: Individuals with functional prototype experience who want to learn professional workflows.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements: Successful completion of Video Game Design with Unreal for Beginners or an equivalent introductory course. Familiarity with foundational programming logic concepts (variables, arrays, branch conditions, and functions).

What You Will Learn

Advanced Blueprint Architecture: Master object-oriented concepts like Blueprint Interfaces, Casting, Inheritance, and Child Blueprints to build scalable, clean systems. Data Persistence & Save Systems: Implement Game Instances, Game Modes, and robust Save/Load frameworks to track player data across multiple levels. Artificial Intelligence (AI): Build responsive enemy and NPC behaviours using AI Controllers, Blackboard data keys, and Behaviour Trees. Advanced UI & Menu Systems: Utilise Unreal Motion Graphics (UMG) to build dynamic, data-tied interfaces like inventories, nested menus, and quest trackers. Enhanced Input & Game Mechanics: Work with the Enhanced Input System to configure multi-layered player abilities, cooldown timers, and combat/interaction loops.

Course Aim

The aim of this course is to bridge the gap between amateur prototyping and professional systems design. You will learn to architect complex, modular Blueprint networks, implement data-driven gameplay, manage artificial intelligence, and optimize a fully functional, production-ready gameplay slice

Course Length

18 hours, 6 weekly sessions of 3 hours.

What You Will Need to Bring

Please bring a notepad, and pen to each session. You may wish to bring a file for any handouts. A laptop with internet access is required for completion of coursework and home learning outside of the classroom. We would also recommend having a dedicated storage device (External SSD or fast USB 3.0 drive, minimum 64GB recommended) to store massive asset libraries and project iterations.

How You Will Learn

This is a practical course, and the sessions will include tutor-led demonstrations, learner-led group activities, instruction and repetition. These will form part of the delivery together with one-to-one support as required.

How you will be assessed

Weekly assignments testing your newly acquired skills. Mid-term project showcasing your modelling and texturing abilities. Final project demonstrating your complete game asset creation pipeline, including a 3D model, textures, and animations.

Where Next

Video Game Design with Unreal Upper Course

Will learners gain a qualification?

Certificate of Completion Only

Extra Info

This intermediate-level course is designed to take your foundational Unreal Engine knowledge and elevate it to a professional standard. Moving past basic block outs and simple triggers, you will dive into advanced visual scripting, systems architecture, dynamic AI behaviour, and performance optimization to build a polished, multi-mechanic gameplay vertical slice.
