Summary:
Create & Animate: Stop-Motion for Families is a hands-on creative workshop where children and parents work together to make a short stop-motion animation using simple materials and everyday technology. Families will learn the basics of storytelling, character creation, and animation while discovering how they can continue the activity together at home.
Who is this course for?
This workshop is designed for families with children aged 6+, where children attend alongside a parent or guardian. No previous animation experience is required.
The session is suitable for:
Parents who want to learn a creative activity they can do at home with their children.
Children who enjoy drawing, storytelling, or making things.
Families interested in digital creativity and animation.
Parents/carers can bring up to two children per adult, and children must be a minimum of 6 years old and a maximum of 18 years old. An additional form will be sent to you upon course confirmation to confirm these details.
Course Aim
The aim of this workshop is to introduce families to the creative process of stop-motion animation while encouraging teamwork, imagination, and confidence. By the end of the session, families will understand how simple materials and a smartphone can be used to create their own animated films at home.
Course length
A one off, 2 hour workshop.
Entry requirements
No previous experience is needed. Basic familiarity with using a phone camera will be helpful, but guidance will be provided during the session.
What you will learn
During the workshop families will learn:
What stop-motion animation is and how it works
How to create a simple story idea for an animation
How to design characters using clay or small toys
How to build a simple background or scene
How to take photos frame-by-frame to create movement
How to work together as a production team to create a short animated film
How you will learn
Learning will take place through a mixture of:
Short tutor demonstration.
Step-by-step guidance.
Creative hands-on activities.
Family teamwork and experimentation.
Group sharing and feedback at the end of the session.
Children will focus on creating and animating characters, while parents learn how to support and continue the activity at home.
What you will need to bring
To keep the activity accessible and budget-friendly, families are asked to bring a few simple items from home:
A smartphone or tablet with a camera
Availability to download the free to use stop motion studio app
Optional: Smartphone charger and/or power bank
Optional: Any small toys or movable figures the children would like to animate.
All additional materials such as modelling clay, paper, drawing tools and simple set-building materials will be provided during the workshop.
