Who is this course for?
This course is designed for adult learners of all backgrounds and abilities who want to transition from feeling “managed” by their technology to being the “manager” of it.
Whether you are an absolute beginner or someone who uses a phone or digital device but lacks the confidence to troubleshoot errors, this course provides a low-pressure, supportive environment.
It is particularly suited for neurodivergent learners or those who find standard tech manuals overwhelming.
Entry Requirements
No formal digital qualifications are required.
A willingness to learn and a commitment to attending the weekly sessions.
You must own a digital device (smartphone, tablet, or laptop) that you can bring to each session.
What You Will Learn
How to find the “Cog Wheel” (Settings) and navigate menus across any device (iOS, Android, Windows, Mac).
Customising your device for your own eyes and ears using accessibility tools (Dark Mode, font scaling, focus tools).
Applying the “Two Golden Rules” to fix glitches and using the Mistake Log to turn digital errors into learning opportunities.
Managing storage, understanding data sizes (MB vs. GB), and clearing “digital dust” (cache) to speed up your device.
Using AI as a “Digital Helper”, syncing photos across devices, and navigating Plymouth’s local portals (NHS/Council) safely.
Learning Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) and identifying “bots” or scams before they happen.
Course Aim
To provide a fluid journey that empowers you to take full control of your digital world. You will move through three phases:
Learn your own device’s settings, accessibility, and connectivity.
Building habits for device health, file organisation, and robust cyber-safety.
Combine advanced tools like AI (Google Gemini), cloud Sync, and local digital services (NHS/Council) into your daily life.
Course Length
5 to 6 weeks, with 6 weeks extension (Overall 12+ weeks)
What You Will Need to Bring
Your own primary device (Smartphone, Tablet, or Laptop) fully charged.
Your charger (just in case).
Any passwords you may need for your email or app store.
Folder for handouts.
Notepad & Pen/Pencil (optional)
How You Will Learn
We use visual maps that show how every task looks on different devices simultaneously.
Each session begins with a “Habit Check” (repetition) and ends with a practical upload to Google Classroom.
A core weekly activity where we celebrate and document the mistakes we made and how we fixed them, removing the fear of “breaking it”.

Assessment is continuous and supportive:
Practical Evidence: Each week you will upload one piece of evidence via Google Classroom.
The Mistake Log: Success is measured by your ability to document and/ or resolve errors.
Individual Learning Plan (ILP): You will set personal goals in Week 1 and review your progress in Week 6 and extension weeks to see how far you have come.
Where Next
Employment: Using your new skills for job searching on Indeed or LinkedIn.
Further Study: Progressing to Qualification courses at OCSW or other specialised Creative Media courses, opportunities/possibilities can be discussed.
Community: Engaging with the Plymouth Online Directory or local volunteering.
Will learners gain a qualification?
This is a non-accredited ‘engagement and confidence’ course. While there is no formal exam, you will receive achievements upon completion of your individual learning plan (ILP).
